Swapbar vs ccusage

ccusage turns your Claude Code logs into detailed cost reports in the terminal. Swapbar keeps the live quota of every Claude account in your menu bar and adds a cost summary. They answer different questions, and many people will want both.

Pick Swapbar if

  • You want to see how much of your 5-hour and weekly quota is left, not only what you spent.
  • You want it in the menu bar, without running a command.
  • You run several Claude accounts and switch between them.
  • You want a notification before you hit the limit.

Pick ccusage if

  • You want detailed reports: by day, month, session or 5-hour block.
  • You work on Linux or Windows.
  • You want JSON output for scripts and dashboards.
  • You also use Codex, OpenCode or Gemini CLI.

Quota left vs money spent

ccusage reads what Claude Code wrote to disk, so it knows your tokens and their API-price cost, but not how much of your subscription quota Anthropic says is left. Swapbar shows that quota, per window and per model, for every account, from the same endpoint Claude Code uses. Its cost section is a summary: today and the last 30 days, per model and per account.

Terminal vs menu bar

ccusage runs when you ask it to and prints a report. Swapbar stays in the menu bar, can notify you when the current account runs low, and switches accounts with a click.

Several accounts

ccusage can be pointed at different Claude config folders. Swapbar reads every account from claude-swap and splits cost by account, working out which account each session used from claude-swap’s switch log.

Questions

Is there a menu bar version of ccusage?
Not from ccusage itself. Swapbar shows Claude Code quota and cost in the macOS menu bar; it is a separate app, not a ccusage front end.
Will Swapbar’s cost match ccusage?
Closely. Both price Claude Code’s local transcripts at API list prices and drop duplicate messages; small differences can come from how each one dedupes and which prices it uses.
Does Swapbar replace ccusage?
For a quick look at quota and spend, yes. For detailed reports or JSON output, keep ccusage.

Keep your limits in view.
